Hospice volunteer opportunities

Join our community of caring hospice volunteers at North Memorial Health and provide vital support and comfort to those facing the end of their life and their loved ones. Visits from hospice volunteers provide emotional support and relief of isolation and loneliness and offer opportunities for moments of remembering and companionship.

As a hospice volunteer, you will:

  • Join a dedicated team that has been serving the community for more than 35 years.
  • Choose your schedule (we ask that you consider 2-4 visits/month).
  • Receive comprehensive online and in-person training.
  • Be matched with someone in hospice care and walk alongside them through their end-of-life journey.
  • Have opportunities for consistent ongoing educational, appreciation, and social events where you can connect with other hospice volunteers and team members.

Volunteer positions

Companionship

Be a compassionate presence through consistent one-to-one visits for socialization, interaction, and connection. Your visits may include providing wheelchair rides, reading, listening to music, and engaging in life review.

Caregiver relief

Provide regular visits and offer caregivers a short break to get out of the home, run errands, see friends, or simply take a short rest from caregiving duties.

Pet visits

Help bring comfort and peace with a certified therapy animal. Dogs must be a minimum of 1 year in age and must be comfortable being touched or crowded by a group of people. Both the animal and the animal handler (volunteer) must be registered and certified to provide therapy.

Vigil

Offer a comforting presence in the final hours of life.

What we’re hearing

“Volunteering has brought my awareness back to what matters: love, presence, forgiveness, and simple yet profound connection. The most rewarding aspect has been the opportunity to become a quiet witness to someone’s final chapter. When I sit with a patient, we might talk about their life, their trials, their joy and somehow it brings healing, connection and incredible growth into my life.”
