A Life Changed by a Devastating Injury
After a fall from a deck left Todd Gaughran with severe foot and ankle injuries, his life changed dramatically. Complications from diabetes and Charcot foot caused chronic ulcers and infections, forcing him into a disabled state for years. Multiple hospital stays and minor surgeries only brought temporary relief, and the pain, risk, and limitations persisted.
“I had been fighting this for so long,” Todd recalled. “It was draining me physically and emotionally.”
A Difficult but Life-Changing Decision
Everything changed when Todd came to North Memorial Health and met Dr. Zelent, a podiatric surgeon who prepared him for a challenging but transformative possibility: amputation.
When Todd’s condition suddenly worsened and a bone began protruding through his foot, his care team acted quickly. He was admitted to Maple Grove Hospital, where orthopedic surgeons from Summit Orthopedics and prosthetists from Hanger Clinic collaborated with Dr. Zelent to deliver a seamless, coordinated care plan.

From Surgery to a New Lease on Life
The surgery went smoothly. Post-op, Todd immediately felt better. “Two weeks after surgery, I felt better than I had in years,” he said. “Those infections were taking a part of me away. Now, I feel like a new man.”
