Medical research indicates intense therapy over a short period of time can improve speech and language abilities for stroke patients with aphasia. North Memorial has the first Intensive Aphasia Program in our region and is one of only six IAP programs in the world.
The North Memorial Difference
- We’re leading the way in stroke recovery. North Memorial’s Intensive Aphasia Program (IAP) is one of only six IAP programs in the world and the first in the region.
- Patients prefer our program. Patients traveled from 10 different states and two countries to participate in North Memorial’s Intensive Aphasia Program. Nearly 20 percent of those were repeat participants.
North Memorial's Intensive Aphasia Program (IAP) is an innovative outpatient program that includes many hours of intense therapy over the course of three weeks.
Patients participate in a combination of individual and group treatments sessions for approximately three and a half hours per day, five days a week. The program is designed to help participants relearn old ways or develop new alternative ways of communicating.
Patients have the opportunity to learn how various pieces of technology (i.e. computers, software, iPads, etc.) can help improve their communication.
Participants also have the opportunity to interact with one another to practice language skills in a natural conversational setting using both relaxed, free-form communication and also structured tasks, supervised by one or more speech pathologists.
To help prospective participants and their caregivers plan ahead, sessions available in 2014 are listed below:
- Spring: 2/24-3/21/2014*
- Summer: 6/2-6/20/2014
- Fall: 10/6-10/31/2014*
