  • Ours is an individualized approach to care. Our rehabilitation center offers a complete line of services that are tailored to meet our patients' unique recovery needs.

Located on the seventh floor of North Memorial Medical Center, our 18-bed unit is often the first place post-stroke or injury patients begin formal rehabilitation. Under the medical direction of Robert Robitaille, D.O., physical medicine and rehabilitation, our patients receive intense and comprehensive care.

Among our broad team of rehabilitation professionals are rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, social workers and interdenominational chaplains.

Admission Criteria

A patient in need of acute rehabilitation on an inpatient basis requires the following:

  • A defined plan for return to the community with appropriate support for post discharge destination.
  • A medical issue that requires physician follow through that cannot be provided in a lower level of care.
  • 24-hour physician availability.
  • 24-hour rehabilitation nursing.
  • An intensive level of therapy including at least 2 of the 3 services of physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy.
  • An ability to participate in and tolerate 3 hours of therapy per day at least 5 days per week.
  • Interdisciplinary approach to their deficits.
  • Medical stability.
  • Age 14 or older.
  • An expectation of practical improvement in a reasonable period of time.
  • A reasonable expectation of their return to the community.
  • Consistent responsiveness to verbal or gestural stimuli with clinicians.
  • Willingness to participate in the program consistently.

Transfer Criteria

  • Medically unstable which prevents them for completing the plan of care.
  • Unable to participate with new restrictions that would keep them in bed for greater than 72 hours.

Discharge Criteria

  • Patient has met goals defined by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Progress for goals has slowed or stopped.
  • Patient medically unstable to participate in the program.
  • Patient has behaviors that prevent them from achieving goals.
  • Patient is unwilling to participate in the program.
  • The expectation for return to the community has changed to a lower level of care, i.e. nursing home.

Patients with Spinal Cord Injury That We Can Accept

North Memorial Rehab Services Unit can accept patients with spinal cord injuries at most levels.

Patients with spinal cord injuries at the Cervical Level of C4-5 with some shoulder movement may be accepted if their injury allows participation.

Patients with a spinal cord injury at the C4 level and above will have function that may require ventilators and/or environmental control units which our unit does not provide. The patient and family would then choose another facility that would be better suited to meet their individual needs.
